How Can New Years' Resolutions Impact Your Bottom Line?

As we begin the second quarter of 2018, many people have already given up on their New Year’s resolution. Why? Is it the reward or the motivation or both or neither?

One of the biggest reasons experts say that people do not follow through on resolutions is all related to self-discipline. Self-discipline is necessary for achieving goals, but is it the core reason for failure? What about motivation? Why do people set resolutions to lose weight or get healthier? Plato once said that human behavior flows from three main things: desire, emotion, and knowledge. When determining goals at an organization or in a person’s career, factoring in the emotional side is important. Many large organizations have entire departments focused on organizational behavior and management. However, the leaders are the ones that interact daily with the employees. Do the leaders know how to connect to the emotional side in order to drive performance? Many leaders are so focused on their own performance that they forget to listen to their employees who ultimately help the leaders achieve the team goals. When leaders let their guard down and become vulnerable, they can make huge strides in increasing productivity and employee engagement. Employees want to connect with their leaders. Every employee is different and has a different set of motivations. If a leader understands what motivates the employee, the leader can determine the best strategy for the team to succeed. If a person is not motivated, self discipline will only get them so far.

How do you as a leader achieve this increased employee motivation? There are some very simple questions to ask the employee. What do you really enjoy about your current role? What do you wish you could change? What skills do you feel you are missing and you would like to have? These simple questions can increase motivation in so many ways. The employee now feels valued and it can increase the trust between the leader and employee. A potential surprise result is that you may find out your employee is interested in an area where there is a need you are trying to fill.

In today’s work environment, the emotional side of the work can be sidelined because leaders have metrics they are desperately trying to meet and feel that there’s no time for feelings. However, by taking a few minutes to talk to your employees or team members, you may gain more than you ever imagined.
